I started oil pulling at the end of March, 2014. My 16-fluid ounce jar of coconut oil lasted through about three months of daily 15-20 minute swooshing practices, and joining forces with Coconut. Here's my story: In those three months, I only missed one morning. About three weeks into the experiment, we went camping and I forgot to pack the jar of coconut oil. Following that lapse, I realized that "something" was happening as a result of the oil pulling. The more I sat with the feeling, the more I felt inspired to write this blog post. It began as an experiment. I'm a scientist at heart, and the notion of swishing coconut oil around in my mouth to whiten my teeth, first and foremost, was intriguing. I started to do more research, and found that a lot of "pullers" experience digestive benefits, too. I love that! Next, came the information on plant spirit shamanism, and the literal joining of forces/focus to create/inspire the manifestation of the greatest good. Coconut Power to the rescue! YAY!!! Specifically, Coconut Spirit plays a major role in ancient rites of purification and protection. In the expression of White, we see the light of Source energy connecting with the flesh. There is also a strong correlation with Athena, the Greek Goddess of Wisdom, and the element of Water, with it's powerful cleansing and yet quietly diligent ways. Through the capacities of Water, we feel the replication and sharing of energy; the transformation and fortification of the whole of the structure.
All of these factors combine to deliver a wonderfully peaceful and strengthening experience for me. And, of course, I'm also incorporating Jin Shin Jyutsu into this practice for a well-rounded meditative start to my day. I wake up, get out of bed, and put about 1 to 2 teaspoons of pure, raw, unfiltered, organic, cold-pressed coconut oil in my mouth before I eat anything or brush my teeth. If the house is cool enough, the oil will be firm to solid, and will scoop easily, and melt quickly once it's in my mouth. (FYI: If I put the jar in the fridge, it gets too hard to scoop.) For the next 15-20 minutes, I am awake, but silent as I set the tone for my day. I use this time to give thanks for the abundance of blessings in this life, to practice a process for clearing my energy fields of dis-harmonies, and to ask for more blessings to come in. All the while, placing my hands in specific locations as they relate to the stomach and spleen function energy flows of Jin Shin Jyutsu. As I am swooshing the coconut oil around in my cheeks, the oil molecules act as a trap for the toxins; essentially pulling the junk out and binding it to the inside of the oil molecules. And it's not just the junk in your mouth that gets removed. The toxins in your digestive system are positively affected by the enzymatic reaction taking place during the oil pulling process as well. By this, I mean they're attracted to the oil just like the toxins in your mouth, and as such, are also "pulled" out. This is why, after 20 minutes, it is important to spit. If held in the mouth for too long, the body will start to re-absorb this icky cocktail. This is IMPORTANT! DO NOT SPIT the OIL into your SINK! It will solidify and clog your pipes. When the time is up, I spit the dirty oil into our compost bucket, and rinse my mouth completely with very warm water. This is followed by a normal brushing of my teeth with Tom's of Maine all natural toothpaste and their Wicked Fresh mouthwash. What have I learned from my experiment with coconut oil pulling? 1. I am enjoying the experience, and benefiting on many levels. 2. I LOVE coconuts! 3. It really does make my teeth whiter. So now you know. Thanks for being YOU!!! With Love and Gratitude, Amy
